The Little Things Matter

My first baby spent 10 days in the NICU. And it really sucked.

I spent the entire time in the hospital with her, sleeping in an unused on-call room. I was heartbroken and worried and wanted nothing more than to take her home. All I could think about was her, so at least 5 days went by before I realized I hadn't showered.

Ugh. I had never appreciated a shower so much than when I finally got to take one in the little bathroom next to the on-call room. The tiles and floor of that bathroom were a sterile white, the lighting painfully fluorescent. But the hot water and simple act of showering made me feel almost human again.

Now that my kids are older, I don't have to wait so long for that simple act of self care. But I still find my soul feeling a bit more nourished after a good, hot shower, getting my hair clean with my favorite shampoo and conditioner and lathering up with one of my favorite soaps.

No, I don't think bathing and showering are the only acts of self care. There are so many other things that we as moms need to keep our spirits happy. But sometimes, the little things help.
